Why it’s complex

What Makes Pet Relocation from Vietnam Complex

Most importing countries class Vietnam as high-risk for rabies, and that comes with strict import procedures.

01

High Rabies Risk

The US, EU, UK, Japan and Australia all treat Vietnam as high-risk, so a Rabies Titer Test (RNATT) is usually required.

02

Import Country Rules

Every country has its own authority with specific documentation requirements — some must begin months before departure.

03

Airline Rules

Breed bans, seasonal embargoes and IATA crate rules all affect which flight your pet can take.

04

Timing Sequence

Vaccines, blood draws, health certificates, and permits must be completed in a precise order within tight validity windows.

How pets fly

Three Shipping Methods

How a pet flies depends on its size and the airline’s policy.

Small dog in a soft-sided travel carrier at the airport

With owner · cabin

In-Cabin PETC

Travels in the cabin with the owner, in a soft-sided carrier under the seat.

With owner · hold

Checked Baggage AVIH

Flies on the same flight as the owner, in the temperature-controlled hold.

Without owner

Manifest CARGO

Does not fly with the owner, with fewer limits on weight and size.

Australia does not accept pets directly from Vietnam. They must first live 180 days in an approved country, which is why the timeline runs 12–18 months.

Each range runs from a small cat to a large dog. Full breakdown in our 2026 pet relocation cost guide.

What goes wrong

6 Most Common Errors in International Pet Relocation

The common mistakes that lead to a refused flight or a refused entry.

1

Microchip After the Rabies Vaccine

The microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccine; a shot given before the chip is not recognised as valid.

2

Blood Draw for RNATT Done Too Early

For most destinations (EU, UK, US, South Korea) blood is drawn at least 30 days after the rabies vaccine; Japan requires two vaccines first. A sample taken too early is not accepted.

3

Expired Export Health Certificate

Each country sets a short validity window — 2 to 7 days for Singapore, 10 days to the date of entry for the EU and UK. A certificate issued outside this window is void.

4

Missing Import Permit

Australia, Singapore, the UAE, Taiwan and Hong Kong require an import permit issued before travel; Japan requires an advance notification at least 40 days ahead. Without a valid import permit, entry is refused.

5

RNATT Waiting Period Miscalculation

EU and UK: 3 months; Japan and Taiwan: 180 days — counted from the date the blood sample was taken, not the result date. One day short means quarantine or refusal on arrival.

6

Choosing the Wrong Airline

Not all airlines accept live animals from Vietnam. Choosing a carrier without verifying live animal policies — including breed restrictions and seasonal embargoes — results in boarding refusal with no refund.

Our controls

How We Prevent These Errors

Every file is checked against our company working standards.

Two-Step Crate Check

Photos and crate measurements are checked and calculated against the IATA standard before booking. Then, before the flight, our staff inspect the crate in person before it leaves for the airport.

Overlapping Permit Rules

Some countries allow an import permit to be issued on arrival, but the airline requires it before the flight. Where rules overlap, we follow the stricter one.

Pets Not Fit to Fly Are Declined

Health, medical history and temperament are assessed at our partner veterinary hospital (Belwee in Ho Chi Minh City) or our partner clinics in Hanoi and Da Nang. We only move pets a vet has confirmed fit to fly.

A Backup Plan, Always

Delays and cancellations for reasons outside anyone’s control (weather, technical faults, conflict…) can always happen. We keep backup routing ready and care for the pet while it waits.

Before anything is filed

Our Two-Layer File Check

Two independent passes run over every case before anything is submitted.

Pass one — automated

Every field, read against every other

The complete file goes through our internal checking system, which reads every field against the others: microchip number, implant date, rabies vaccination date, owner name, passport number, email, phone and destination address. Anything that disagrees is flagged to the case handler within minutes rather than discovered on the day of the flight.

Microchip no.Implant dateRabies dateOwner namePassport no.EmailPhoneDestination address

The system uses AI to stay accurate under heavy workloads and take pressure off our staff.

Pass two — by hand

Independent cross-check by staff

Two members of staff then read the file themselves. One is the handler who built it. The second is someone who has not touched this case at all, brought in specifically because a person who has read a document five times stops seeing what is on it.

There are judgements a system cannot make — whether a clinic stamp will satisfy a particular authority, whether a route is worth the risk this month. That is what the second pass is for.

Fit-to-Fly Screening

Fit to Fly Is Decided Before a Booking, Not at the Counter

Fit-to-Fly Screening runs in the first conversation. Declining then costs a phone call, not a cancelled move.

Airline Breed Lists

Restricted-breed lists are written airline by airline. Pit Bull types and Chow Chow appear on most lists; Rottweiler on some. Vietnam Airlines names four cat breeds outright — Burmese, Exotic, Himalayan, Persian.

Two Kinds of Bans

A destination’s import ban and an airline’s carriage list are separate documents. French Bulldogs are not banned by common destinations, yet many airlines refuse this snub-nosed breed in the hold. Singapore, on the other hand, bans the Akita, so even if an airline would carry one, it cannot enter.

Age & Cabin Limits

Eight weeks and weaned is the absolute floor; on most routes out of Vietnam the airline minimum is 10 to 16 weeks. Cabin allowances count pet and carrier together. Most carriers refuse pregnant animals.

Sedation Is Not Used

IATA and IPATA both advise against sedation, and a pet known to be sedated can be refused at the counter. The answer to travel stress is getting your pet used to its crate.

FAQ

FAQs About International Pet Shipping

How early should I start preparing to ship my pet from Vietnam?+
It depends on the destination. For China, the UAE or the United States, 2–4 months is usually enough; for Europe, 4–6 months. For Japan and Taiwan, start 7–10 months ahead because of the 180-day wait after the blood test. Australia takes 12–18 months, because pets from Vietnam must first live 180 days in an approved country. See how soon a pet can fly after vaccination.
How much does it cost to ship a dog or cat from Vietnam?+
Costs run from about $1,000 for a cat to China, Japan or Taiwan to $15,000+ for a large dog to Australia. The price depends on your destination, the size and weight of your pet, and whether they travel in-cabin, as checked baggage (AVIH), or as manifest cargo. Additional costs — quarantine fees, import permits, RNATT lab fees — are billed separately. See the full cost breakdown by destination, and the fees that can appear only after landing.
Does every country require a Rabies Titer Test (RNATT) for pets from Vietnam?+
Not every country, but most strict destinations do, because they treat Vietnam as high-risk for rabies. Japan, Taiwan, the EU, the UK, South Korea, Singapore and the UAE require a passing result; China requires one to avoid 30 days of quarantine, and the US requires one for dogs or a 28-day stay in an Animal Care Facility. Several countries then add a waiting period counted from the blood-draw date — 3 months for the EU and UK, 180 days for Japan and Taiwan. Learn more about the RNATT process.
Can I ship a large or brachycephalic dog from Vietnam internationally?+
Large dogs can be shipped, but they typically travel as manifest cargo — as an independent air freight consignment with an Airway Bill, separate from the passenger. Most airlines refuse snub-nosed breeds (Pugs, French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Persian cats) in the hold; some still accept them in the cabin if small enough, or in cargo during cooler months, while Vietnam Airlines refuses them on every method. If your dog is a restricted breed, contact us before booking any flights. Read the airline rules for pet transport from Vietnam.
What happens if my pet is rejected at the destination border?+
It depends on the country: the pet may be sent back to Vietnam, held in quarantine at the owner’s expense, or in the strictest cases euthanised. Border rejection is always costly — financially and emotionally. This is why correct documentation, validated before departure, is not optional. Read what happens when a pet is denied entry, and how a delayed or cancelled flight is handled.
What is the difference between in-cabin, AVIH, and cargo for pet travel?+
In-cabin (PETC) means your pet travels in the passenger cabin — usually up to 6–8 kg including the carrier, depending on the airline (Vietnam Airlines: under 6 kg). AVIH (checked baggage) means your pet travels in the temperature-controlled hold of the same aircraft as the owner. Manifest cargo means the pet travels as an independent freight shipment, often on a different flight. The method available depends on your pet’s size, breed, and the policies of the airline on your route. See the full comparison of travel options.
Does Daisy Pet also help bring pets INTO Vietnam?+
Yes — this page describes our service for relocating pets FROM Vietnam to another country. If you’re moving to Vietnam instead and need to bring a pet IN, the process is different: it follows Vietnam’s own animal quarantine declaration and import requirements rather than the destination-country permits and RNATT timelines described above.
