Before you book

Core Requirements for Domestic Transport

Four things every pet needs before an interprovincial trip, regardless of transport method.

Valid Rabies Vaccination

≥ 30 days before

Given at least 30 days and no more than 12 months before the move, and recorded in a vaccination booklet from a licensed clinic. A booster given before the previous shot expires adds no new wait; a first shot, or one given after the last one lapsed, needs the full 30 days.

Domestic Animal Health Certificate

1–2 working days

Issued by the provincial veterinary authority (Sub-Department of Livestock Production and Animal Health) under Circular 01/2026/TT-BNNMT for any move out of the home province — a clinical check and paperwork, not a holding period, required by law regardless of vehicle.

Airline Pre-Registration

If flying · ≥ 24 hours ahead

If flying, the pet must be registered separately from the passenger ticket, with breed, weight, and crate size confirmed in advance. Vietnam Airlines needs at least 24 hours’ notice, and each flight takes only a few pets (Vietjet caps it at 3 crates), so book early.

A Real Travel Crate

Every method

Laundry baskets, produce crates, and holding cages are refused by any professional operator — the crate needs to meet IATA standards, not just “fit the animal.”

The reality

Pet Transport Methods in Vietnam

Car, bus, train, and air are the four most common ways pets are moved within Vietnam today. The bus and train photos show common practice on the market — not how Daisy Pet operates.

Car Pet Transport

Bus Pet Transport

Pets are commonly sent in a plastic produce crate wrapped in film, loaded into the luggage hold with motorbikes and freight — a hold that is rarely air-conditioned

Train Pet Transport

Understand the Risks Behind Each Method

The two failure points behind most domestic transport incidents — and how to lower the risk.

No Air Control & Non-IATA Crates

Several of the methods above have no air conditioning, or rely on crates that don’t meet IATA standards — both create real danger for the pet inside.

No Professional Standards

Most domestic operators have no enforced safety checks or working standard to confirm a pet is being handled properly.

How to Lower the Risk

Travel in the coolest hours, use a ventilated crate your pet can stand, turn and lie down in, leave water in the crate, and on a bus ask exactly where the crate will ride — the passenger cabin or the luggage hold.

By weight and breed

Air or Road: Which Fits Your Pet?

Weight, breed and distance decide the method — usually before price does.

Small pet, up to 6–7 kg with carrier

In the cabin

Flies at your feet: under 6 kg on Vietnam Airlines, up to 7 kg on Vietjet, in a carrier no larger than 35 × 30 × 20 cm.

Medium pet, up to 32 kg with crate

Checked baggage

Only Vietnam Airlines offers it on domestic routes. You check in at the passenger check-in counter and collect your pet at the baggage belt or the oversized-baggage area.

Over 32 kg, or a breed airlines refuse

Cargo or road

Over 32 kg with the crate, the pet must travel as Manifest Cargo. Refused breeds such as Bulldogs, Terriers, Boxers and Pugs usually travel by road in a climate-controlled car.

Short trip, or no airport nearby

Road by car

For nearby provinces, a car is simpler and safer than a bus luggage hold. A pet flying in from abroad to Tan Son Nhat or Noi Bai should take a short connecting domestic flight if there is an airport near your destination.

FAQ

FAQs — Domestic Pet Transport in Vietnam

The questions pet owners ask us most about moving a pet between provinces. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Do I need paperwork to move my pet between provinces by car?+
Yes. A domestic animal health certificate is legally required for any interprovincial move, regardless of transport method — it’s not just a flying-specific rule. It’s a clinical check and paperwork only; the pet is never confined or held. The requirements above list exactly what to prepare.
How do I get the domestic animal health certificate, and how long is it valid?+
Apply in the province you are leaving: online through the National Public Service Portal, by post, by email or in person. An online application gets an electronic certificate. The office reviews the application within one working day, and for a vaccinated pet the certificate is issued within one working day of the check. It stays valid for the actual length of the trip, not a fixed 10 or 15 days.
Which domestic airline should I choose for my pet?+
It depends on your pet’s size. Both carriers take small pets in the cabin — Vietnam Airlines under 6 kg and Vietjet up to 7 kg, carrier included — but only Vietnam Airlines offers checked baggage for heavier pets (under 32 kg with the crate); Vietjet is cabin-only. Once you’ve picked a carrier, see how to book pet travel step by step.
Is it safe to send my pet by interprovincial bus or train?+
Not reliably. Most buses place pets in the unconditioned luggage hold, and trains don’t guarantee air conditioning in the freight car — both carry real heat-related risk that a car or plane doesn’t.
Can brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds fly domestically?+
Not with Vietnam Airlines: its banned-breed list includes flat-faced breeds such as the Pug, French Bulldog, Shih Tzu and Persian cat, and it applies to every travel option, cabin included. Vietjet may also refuse them. For these pets, a road move in a climate-controlled vehicle is usually the safer choice. Check the full list of banned and restricted breeds before booking.
How far ahead should I arrange a domestic pet move?+
Allow time for three things. A first rabies shot, or one given after the last one lapsed, needs 30 days before travel. Vietnam Airlines needs at least 24 hours’ notice to register a pet, and each flight takes only a few. The health certificate takes about one to two working days. We recommend contacting us at least one week before the trip, so there is time to deal with anything unexpected.
Can my pet ride with me on a limousine van or bus?+
Some limousine van operators let a small pet ride in the passenger cabin, in a backpack or carrier, as long as it is clean and does not disturb other passengers. Rules differ by company, so ask and get a clear yes before you buy the ticket. Standard interprovincial buses usually put pets in the luggage hold, which is rarely air-conditioned. Either way, once the pet leaves its home province it still needs a domestic animal health certificate.
How much does domestic pet transport cost?+
It has two parts. The airline’s pet fee is paid to the airline: on Vietnam Airlines domestic routes, 5,000,000 VND in the cabin, or 1,000,000 / 1,500,000 / 2,000,000 VND as checked baggage (up to 9 kg / 9–16 kg / 16–32 kg), before VAT; Vietjet charges 4,000,000 VND per cabin crate before VAT. Our own service fee is quoted separately for each trip. See the full Vietnam Airlines fee breakdown.
