Not every owner can personally fly with their pet, and not every relocation needs Manifest Cargo. For one client who had purchased two Ragdoll cats in Vietnam to bring to Malaysia, we offered a third option: escorted Checked Baggage, where a Daisy Pet staff member — not the owner — travels on the same flight as the cats. This is the real account of how that relocation worked, from Hanoi to Kuala Lumpur — see our Malaysia Pet Relocation Guide for the complete country roadmap.

What “Escorted Checked Baggage” Actually Means

Escorted Checked Baggage is not a different shipping category from standard AVIH — it uses the exact same Checked Baggage rules as any pet flying with its owner. The only difference is who is sitting on the plane: a trained member of our international pet relocation service travels with the pets instead of the client, then hands them over once all Malaysian entry procedures are complete.

We only recommend this option when two conditions are both met:

  • The destination country has an easy visa process for our staff — typically Southeast Asian destinations like Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
  • The shipment includes at least two pets. Because this service requires purchasing a passenger ticket for our escort in addition to the pet fees, a single pet rarely makes the added cost worthwhile — but splitting that fixed cost across two or more pets brings it back in line with a standard relocation budget.

This particular client had two Ragdoll cats and a Malaysia destination — a straightforward fit for the service.

Choosing the Route and Airline

For this relocation, we selected Malaysia Airlines for the Hanoi (HAN) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL) route. Beyond being a genuinely pet-friendly carrier, Malaysia Airlines runs a high weekly flight frequency on this route, which gives us much more flexibility when scheduling the exact pickup and handover timing our escort needs.

Check-In Day

At the airport, our escort brought the full document set required for the two cats to check in: the vaccination record book, Vietnam’s export quarantine certificate, and the Malaysia import permit. Airline staff reviewed the paperwork, then weighed each cat together with its crate — each came to approximately 6.8kg, comfortably within the standard Checked Baggage weight allowance.

Document verification and crate weighing happen at the same passenger check-in counter used for any other traveler — no separate cargo terminal is needed for Checked Baggage.

Expert tip: if you are budgeting for excess baggage fees at the counter, bring cash or a credit card. Airline counters on this route do not accept bank transfers, and arriving without a valid payment method on hand is an easily avoidable way to delay your own check-in.

The Flight and Arrival

The flight from Hanoi to Kuala Lumpur takes approximately 4 hours. On landing, the two cats were brought from the aircraft to the airport’s quarantine office, where our escort completed the Malaysian import procedures on their behalf.

After landing, Checked Baggage pets are collected separately from standard luggage and brought directly to the import clearance area.

Once the import paperwork was cleared, our escort handed the two Ragdoll cats over to their new owner in Malaysia — completing a relocation that never required the owner to leave home.

When This Service Makes Sense for You

If you are purchasing or adopting a pet in Vietnam to bring to a Southeast Asian destination, and you cannot personally travel with them, escorted Checked Baggage is often the simplest and most cost-effective route — provided you have two or more pets to make the added staff travel cost worthwhile. For a single pet, or for destinations with a more complex visa process for our escorts, standard Manifest Cargo (as in our Golden Retriever cargo case study) or owner-accompanied Checked Baggage remain the better fit.
