The waiting period after pet vaccination depends on two things: whether the rabies vaccination is new and whether your destination asks for a blood test. A pet with a valid rabies vaccination flying to a country without a blood test does not wait at all. A first vaccination means a wait of 21 to 30 days, and a titer test country adds three to six months after the blood draw.
Waiting Period After Pet Vaccination: Short Answer
- How long after the rabies shot can my pet fly? 21 to 30 days after a first vaccination, depending on the country.
- Does a valid vaccination mean a new wait? No. A booster given before the old one expires starts no new wait.
- Which countries take longest? Countries that require a rabies titer test, such as the EU, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore.
- What is the fastest route? A valid vaccination and a destination without a titer test. The time then goes into paperwork and the flight booking.
- What else cannot be rushed? Import permits, advance notices, flight space and quarantine bookings.
Why Do Countries Make Pets Wait After the Rabies Vaccination?
A vaccine does not protect on the day it is given. The immune system needs time to make enough antibodies against rabies. A wait after a first vaccination gives the body that time.
Countries that are free of rabies go one step further. They ask for a blood test that proves the antibodies are there, then a wait before the pet may enter. The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) sets the model: a test result of at least 0.5 IU/ml taken 3 to 12 months before travel, or six months of quarantine (WOAH Terrestrial Code, Article 8.14.7). Each country then sets its own dates.
Does a Valid Rabies Vaccination Mean No Waiting Period?
Yes, in most cases. If the vet gives a booster before the previous vaccination expires, the protection never breaks. The UK, for example, starts no new wait for a booster given on time (GOV.UK rabies vaccination and boosters).
A booster given after the old vaccination has expired counts as a first vaccination. The wait starts again. For titer test countries, the blood test has to be repeated too.
A three-year vaccine is not always valid for three years when you travel. Our guide to rabies vaccine validity for travel explains which countries accept it.
How Long Is the Waiting Period in Each Country?
The table shows the wait for pets flying from Vietnam. The microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination, or the vaccination does not count.
| Destination | Wait after a first rabies vaccination | Extra wait for the titer test |
|---|---|---|
| Thailand | 21 days | No titer test |
| South Korea | Vaccinated at least 30 days before arrival | Titer test, no wait after the blood draw |
| UAE | 21 days | Titer test, no wait after the blood draw |
| European Union | 21 days | Blood sample at least 90 days before the health certificate is issued |
| United Kingdom | 21 days | 3 months from the blood draw date |
| Taiwan | Blood drawn after the vaccination | 90 days (with 7 days of quarantine) or 180 days (no quarantine) before arrival |
| Singapore | Blood drawn after the vaccination | Blood sample at least 90 days before export, then at least a month in quarantine |
| Japan | Two vaccinations at least 30 days apart | 180 days from the blood draw date |
| Hong Kong | — | At least 120 days of quarantine on arrival |
For titer test countries, the clock starts on the blood draw date, not the vaccination date. How the test works, and how long a result stays valid, is in our guide to the rabies titer test for pets from Vietnam.

What Is the Earliest Your Pet Can Fly?
These four examples count from the day of the rabies vaccination. They assume the microchip is already in and the pet is old enough to be vaccinated.
Example 1: Valid Vaccination, Flying to Thailand
There is no vaccine wait. Thailand’s import permit is requested at least 7 working days before the flight (Thai Department of Livestock Development). The pet can fly once the permit, the health certificate and a flight are ready, often within two weeks. The pet shipping timeline for Thailand lists every step.
Example 2: First Vaccination, Flying to Thailand
The pet can fly from day 22, after the 21-day wait. The permit request runs during that wait.
Example 3: First Vaccination, Flying to the EU
The vet draws blood from day 31. The health certificate can be issued from day 121, when the sample is 90 days old. The earliest flight is about four months after the vaccination. Our EU pet shipping timeline from Vietnam sets out the dates.
Example 4: First Vaccination, Flying to Japan
Japan needs a second vaccination on day 31 or later, and the blood can be drawn the same day. The pet can arrive from day 211, after 180 days. That is about seven months. The Japan pet shipping timeline shows the full plan.
For Taiwan, plan for about four months with 7 days of quarantine, or seven months without quarantine. In 2025–2026, six cats we moved to Taiwan had their blood drawn on 10 October. Their permit was approved on 23 March. Their planned arrival was 27 April, 199 days after the draw, without quarantine.
What Cannot Be Rushed Besides the Vaccine?
A finished waiting period does not mean the pet flies the next day. These steps have their own lead times.
- Import permits and notices. Japan needs an advance notice at least 40 days before arrival. In the Taiwan case above, the permit took almost three months from application to approval.
- Flight space. Each flight carries only a few pets, and the airline must approve each booking. On one 2026 route to Turkey, the earliest available space was 13 days away.
- Quarantine and arrival facilities. Singapore’s quarantine station must be booked ahead. In the United States, the CDC-registered animal care facility takes about 7 working days to review a booking.
- Hot weather. Some airlines stop carrying pets in the hottest months; see our page on temperature limits for flying pets.
- The health certificate. It is valid for only a few days, so it cannot be prepared early. In our recent cases, the Vietnamese export health certificate was issued 2 to 6 days before the flight.

In Ho Chi Minh City, Daisy Pet clients complete the microchip, vaccination, and blood-draw steps at Belwee International Animal Hospital (Go Vap), a licensed veterinary hospital; Daisy Pet counts the waiting period against the destination’s rule. See who does what in the process.
Which Mistakes Restart the Waiting Period?
- Vaccinating before the microchip. The vaccination does not count, and the wait has to restart from a new one.
- A late booster. It counts as a first vaccination, so the wait and any titer test start again.
- Drawing blood too early. A sample taken less than a month after the vaccination is not accepted.
- Missing the end of a window. Taiwan and Singapore set a latest date as well as an earliest one. A pet that misses it needs a new test.
- Arriving before the wait is over. The pet may be held in quarantine or refused, as our page on being denied entry at the destination explains.
How Soon Can a Puppy or Kitten Fly?
A puppy or kitten can have its first rabies vaccination at 12 weeks old at the earliest. The waiting period then starts. For a titer test country such as the EU, the earliest flight is at about seven months old. Our guide on whether puppies and kittens can travel internationally gives the age for each country.
FAQ: Waiting Period After Pet Vaccination
Can my pet fly the day after a rabies booster?
Yes, if the booster was given before the previous vaccination expired. A late booster counts as a first vaccination and starts a new wait.
Does the waiting period start from the vaccination or the blood draw?
From the vaccination for the first wait of three to four weeks. For titer test countries, the longer wait starts from the blood draw date.
Why does Japan take so long?
Japan requires two rabies vaccinations and a waiting period of 180 days after the blood draw. A pet that arrives early stays in quarantine until the time is complete.
Can an agent shorten the waiting period?
No. The dates are set by each country’s law. An agent can only plan the steps so that no day is lost.
Does Hong Kong have a waiting period for pets from Vietnam?
Hong Kong uses quarantine instead: pets from Vietnam stay at least 120 days on arrival.
