Taiwan pet quarantine for a dog or cat from Vietnam lasts seven days, at the Guanyin station of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency (APHIA) in Taoyuan. It applies when the pet does not meet the waiver conditions. You do not book it yourself: the import permit reserves the space.
Short Answer: How Does Pet Quarantine Work in Taiwan?
- Who goes to quarantine? A pet from Vietnam whose blood test is under 180 days old on arrival, or whose result did not reach APHIA in the required way.
- How long? Seven days in the normal case. Longer if a document or date is wrong.
- Where? Only at APHIA’s Guanyin station in Taoyuan.
- Do I book it? No. The permit reserves the space when it is issued.
- What does it cost? On a 2026 permit, NT$1,480 for transport from Taoyuan airport and NT$6,625 for the seven days.
How quarantine fits into the whole move is in our overview of pet shipping to Taiwan.
When Does a Pet from Vietnam Have to Go to Quarantine?
By default, every dog or cat from Vietnam stays seven days in quarantine. The stay is waived only when both conditions are met:
- Blood test age: the rabies blood sample was taken 180 days to 1 year before arrival.
- How APHIA got the result: the permit was filed at least 120 days ahead, or the laboratory or Vietnam’s veterinary authority emailed the result to rabiesreport@aphia.gov.tw.

Pets on the faster plan, which arrive about four months after vaccination, always go to quarantine. The full conditions are in our guide to Taiwan pet import regulations.
How Long Is the Quarantine?
- Seven days: the normal stay when all documents are correct.
- 30 days: when the species, sex or age on the export certificate is missing or wrong, or when the vaccination does not meet the rules.
- Until 97 days after the blood sample: when the blood test is less than 90 days old on arrival.
These periods come from Article 15 of APHIA’s Quarantine Requirements for the Importation of Dogs and Cats.
Time the pet spends waiting at the airport before transfer does not count toward the stay.
Where Does Quarantine Take Place?
At APHIA’s Guanyin station, run by its Taoyuan branch. The permit system lists it as the only quarantine premises now available. Pets landing at Songshan, Kaohsiung or Taichung are also taken there.
Older guides name the animal hospitals of National Taiwan University and National Chung Hsing University. National Taiwan University stopped taking imported pets in 2019. National Chung Hsing University suspended the service in 2024 for construction, and APHIA has not announced a reopening.
Do You Need to Book a Quarantine Space?
No. APHIA’s import FAQ for dogs and cats says that receiving the import permit means the space has been reserved. APHIA holds 12 days, the seven-day stay plus five days of margin, and arranges the space only when the application documents are complete.
APHIA’s dog and cat import permit system shows each station’s free spaces, but only as a guide. After the permit is issued, you fill in a short questionnaire about the pet.
Our Taiwan import permit guide explains the application.
What Happens on Arrival Day?
- Land on a weekday. The station takes in pets from 09:00 to 11:30 and from 13:30 to 16:00 on working days, and not at weekends or on public holidays.
- Clear airport inspection before 13:30. At Taipei Songshan, the deadline is 12:30. A pet cleared later waits at the airport holding area until the next transfer.
- Show the documents. A copy of the permit, the original export certificates and the air waybill or customs declaration, at APHIA’s animal quarantine counter.
- Pay in cash. A NT$100 processing fee and the transport fee, in New Taiwan dollars.
- Transfer to Guanyin. APHIA staff escort the pet in a vehicle APHIA arranges.
A snub-nosed pet, or a pet aged 10 or older, may be allowed to travel without the escort. The branch at the port must agree, the crate is sealed, and the pet must reach Guanyin within the time APHIA sets. A pet that cannot go to the station on arrival day stays in its own travel crate, so pack bedding or a litter tray.
How Much Does Quarantine Cost?
On a 2026 import permit we handled, APHIA listed these fees:
- Transport from Taoyuan airport to Guanyin: NT$1,480 on weekdays, NT$1,980 on holidays.
- Seven-day stay: NT$6,625. Vet care, such as a rabies booster, is extra.
- Handling outside working hours: up to NT$3,000 each time the pet enters or leaves.
The station contacts you about its fees, which you settle before the stay ends. A full comparison with the waiver route is in our pet relocation cost to Taiwan guide.

What Happens During the Stay?
- Rabies booster: if the vaccination passes one year during the stay, the station gives a booster and the owner pays.
- Low antibody result: if a test during quarantine shows less than 0.5 IU/ml, the pet receives a booster.
- Birth: a mother that gives birth stays with her young until her own stay ends.
- Visits and pick-up: the owner can authorize another person, with APHIA’s authorization form, to visit or collect the pet.
Can a Seriously Ill Pet Quarantine at Home?
Yes, if APHIA’s experts agree. The rule covers serious conditions that are not infectious, such as terminal cancer, paralysis, severe heart or lung disease, or kidney failure. Separation anxiety counts only if the medical records show it has caused serious physical harm.
The application must be filed at least 30 days before arrival, with medical records showing the microchip number and a vet’s diagnosis. The home must keep the pet away from other animals that can catch rabies. If the experts refuse, the pet goes to Guanyin.
How Can You Avoid Quarantine?
Take the rabies blood test early. A sample taken at least 180 days before arrival qualifies, if APHIA receives the result in the required way. In practice, this means about seven months from the rabies vaccination to arrival. The day-by-day plan is in our pet shipping timeline from Vietnam to Taiwan.
