Key Facts Before Shipping a Pet to South Korea

Before you start, understand these 4 points of pet importation into South Korea to avoid costly mistakes.

01

Quarantine

None (Same-day release)

02

Microchip

15-digit ISO-compliant

03

Rabies Titer Test

Required ≥ 0.5 IU/mL

04

Preparation Timeline

From 30 days + lab time

South Korea Pet Import Regulations (APQA Compliance)

To avoid mandatory quarantine at the owner’s expense, the following critical conditions must be strictly met as per the latest APQA regulations:

01

ISO Microchip, Number Must Match

Every dog and cat needs a 15-digit ISO microchip, at any age, and the number on the health certificate must match the scan. We implant the chip before or on the day of the rabies vaccine, the international standard, so every record carries the same number.

02

Rabies Titer Test (RNATT)

A blood sample must be drawn at least 30 days post-vaccination and sent to an internationally recognised lab (FAVN or RFFIT). The passing result (≥ 0.5 IU/mL) is generously valid for 24 months prior to arrival.

03

Same-Day Release (Zero Quarantine)

Unlike Singapore (30-day quarantine) or Japan (180-day wait after the blood test), South Korea releases a compliant pet the same day. If your Health Certificate, Titer Test, and Microchip perfectly align with APQA standards, your pet goes home with you straight from the airport.

04

No Breed Bans

South Korea does not ban any dog breed at the border. Tosa, Pit Bull, AmStaff, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Rottweiler and their crosses count as “dangerous dogs”: report the import within 7 days and apply for a local keeping permit.

Step by step

THE 5-STEP PREPARATION TIMELINE

A flawless relocation is built on precision. Here is how we chart the course to navigate the APQA guidelines for South Korea.

01

Microchip & Rabies Vaccination

We ensure a 15-digit ISO microchip is implanted FIRST, immediately followed by an approved inactivated Rabies vaccine.

02

RNATT Serum Export

At least 30 days post-vaccination, blood is drawn and sent to an internationally recognised lab to secure the required ≥ 0.5 IU/mL titer result.

03

Flight Booking

Once the lab result is secured, we book the optimal direct flight (cargo or in-cabin depending on airline and pet size) to Incheon International Airport.

04

Pre-Export Inspection

Shortly before the flight, the pet has its clinical exam and the Regional Animal Health and Production Office issues the export health certificate (Form 13a), showing the microchip number and titer result Korea checks.

05

Arrival & Same-Day Clearance

Your pet arrives at Incheon. We present the flawless original documents to the APQA officer for on-site inspection, allowing immediate release.

Three Shipping Methods for a Short Route

South Korea is a short flight from Vietnam, so in-cabin travel is available to more pets than on longer routes.

Poodle in a soft-sided travel bag at the airport

In-Cabin (PETC)

Travels in the cabin with the owner, in a soft-sided carrier under the seat.

Pet owner checking in a dog crate at the airline counter

Checked Baggage (AVIH)

Flies on the same flight as the owner, in the temperature-controlled hold.

Pet crate on a pallet in the airport cargo warehouse

Manifest Cargo

Does not fly with the owner, with fewer limits on weight and size.

Welfare Standards That Apply

Applied to every pet flying the South Korea route.

Age and Cabin Limits Vary by Carrier

Eight weeks and fully weaned is the floor for carriage, and some airlines set it higher. Cabin allowances count pet and crate together. Pregnant animals are not accepted.

Sedation Is Not Used

IATA and IPATA both advise against sedation, and a pet known to be sedated can be refused at the counter. Crate conditioning on a six-week schedule does that work instead.

FAQs About Pet Shipping from Vietnam to South Korea

Will my pet be quarantined in South Korea?+
If all your documents (microchip, vaccine, RNATT, and Health Certificate) are perfectly prepared and match the APQA requirements, your pet will NOT be quarantined. They will be released on the same day.
Can I bring my Pitbull to South Korea?+
Yes. South Korea refuses no breed at the border, but a Pit Bull counts as a “dangerous dog”. The owner reports the import within 7 days of the Korean quarantine certificate (fine up to KRW 3,000,000) and applies for a keeping permit with insurance, neutering and a temperament assessment. In public, the dog wears a muzzle and a leash.
How long is the Rabies Titer Test (RNATT) valid for Korea?+
Korea is very generous: a passing RNATT result (≥ 0.5 IU/mL) is valid for 24 months from the date the blood was drawn.
My puppy is only 2 months old. Can she travel?+
Yes. Pets under 90 days of age at the time of arrival are exempt from the rabies vaccination and RNATT requirements. They only need an ISO microchip and a valid Health Certificate.
Can I bring more than one pet?+
Yes. Up to 9 dogs or cats need no advance notice and no import permit. For 10 or more, an animal import declaration must be filed with APQA in advance. Airlines set their own per-passenger limits.
