Pet Airport Departure

What happens depends on how your pet flies. A pet in the cabin or in checked baggage follows your booking, so the airline deals with you both. A cargo pet waits in the airline’s live animal area until a new flight is agreed. In both cases, the documents with dates on them usually need the most attention.

Delayed or Cancelled Pet Flights: Quick Answers

  • Is my pet looked after during a delay? Yes. After check-in or cargo hand-over, the pet stays in the airline’s care until it boards.
  • Who rebooks my pet? You do, with the airline, if your pet flies with you. The shipper and the airline agree a new flight for a cargo pet.
  • Are my pet’s documents still valid? Often not, if the date moves far. Health certificates, permits and arrival notices carry dates.
  • Can anyone guarantee a specific flight? No. A pet’s place is certain only when the airline confirms it.
  • Who pays for the change? Whoever caused it, under the airline’s conditions and your contract.

Pets Travelling With You: Delays, Cancellations and Missed Connections

A pet in the cabin or in checked baggage is tied to your ticket, as explained in pet transport methods explained. When your flight changes, your pet’s place changes with it.

  • Cancelled before departure: if the pet will not fly, the airline returns it to you at the check-in counter. You then need a pet place on the new flight.
  • Delayed after check-in: your pet stays in the airline’s care until it boards. Ask the staff where the pet is waiting and when it will be loaded.
  • Missed connection on one ticket: the airline rebooks you and the pet together, subject to space for the pet.
  • Missed connection on separate tickets: you collect the pet and check it in again, under the transit country’s rules. This is covered in how pets are handled during layovers.

Space for pets on the new flight is limited. Vietnam Airlines, for example, takes at most two cabin pets in economy and nine checked pets on each flight. A full flight means waiting for the next one with space.

Pets Shipped as Cargo: Where the Pet Waits

A cargo pet that cannot leave on time stays in the airline’s live animal area at the cargo terminal. In September 2026, the live animal store at Noi Bai logged a dog’s holding temperature at 24°C, inside its required range of 15 to 30°C. That store is a temperature-controlled room, not a cold room.

The air waybill (AWB) sets the airline’s rights. Its printed conditions let the airline carry the shipment on another flight, another airline or via a stopover, unless the shipper instructs otherwise. The shipper therefore states any route limits when it books, such as “no connection”.

The shipper and the airline then agree the new flight. The owner should hear about each change from the shipper, which is how updates work in our communication before, during and after the trip.

A pet flying without its owner always travels this way. How that works from start to finish is explained in can my pet travel without me.

Which Documents Must Be Redone When the Date Changes?

A new flight date can make dated papers invalid. Check each one against the new date before you accept the change.

Document What a new date can mean
Export health certificate Each destination sets how long it stays valid. The EU accepts it for 10 days from issue to the entry check.
US CDC Dog Import Form The receipt names the arrival date, airport and flight. A route change means a new form.
Japan advance notification Filed at least 40 days before arrival. The flight details must be updated with the Animal Quarantine Service.
Taiwan import permit The date can be changed once, at least 10 days before the new arrival. A second change needs a new permit.
Thailand import permit Issued 15 to 60 days before entry. A long delay can push the date outside that window.
Australia export permit The pet must leave within 72 hours of the permit being issued. A new date needs a new inspection slot.

Two cases show how this plays out. In August 2026, a dog’s US booking changed twice: from a Korean Air route into Atlanta to a Qatar Airways route into Miami, then to a later date. Each change needed a new CDC Dog Import Form, so the dog had three receipts in all.

In March 2026, a cargo booking from Sydney to Hanoi lapsed before payment. The airline space and the export inspection slot in Australia were both released. The agent had to book them again from the start.

Other permits work in a similar way, as explained in our guide to the pet import permit. Japan’s notice rules are set out by its Animal Quarantine Service.

Can Anyone Guarantee My Pet Will Be on a Specific Flight?

No. An airline confirms a pet’s place only after it reviews the booking. A transport company cannot override that decision.

  • Vietnam Airlines confirmed a cat’s cabin place to Kuala Lumpur only the day before departure, in September 2026.
  • Etihad gives final approval only after it receives all documents, at least 72 hours before the flight.
  • China Airlines needs the pet’s details at least 48 hours before departure.
  • Cargo moves under the AWB conditions, which allow another flight or airline.

Weather can also stop a booked pet on the day, as covered in temperature restrictions for flying pets. What a transport company can do is book early, keep a backup route and leave slack in the document dates. Our own commitment is set out in our working standards: we do not promise a flight, we commit to how fast the next confirmed place is secured.

Who Pays When a Pet’s Flight Changes?

Whoever caused the change usually bears the cost. An airline cancellation falls under the airline’s conditions. A late document or payment falls on the side that caused it. The full split is explained in what happens if something goes wrong during pet transport.

What to Do If Your Pet’s Flight Is Disrupted

  1. Find out where your pet is. At check-in, with you, or in the airline’s live animal area.
  2. Get the new flight confirmed for the pet. A seat for you does not mean a place for your pet.
  3. Check every dated document. Compare the health certificate, permits and arrival notices with the new date.
  4. Update the destination. File a new US CDC form or update Japan’s notification where needed.
  5. Tell your transport company at once. It can rebook cargo, adjust documents and alert the partner agent at the destination.

Delayed or Cancelled Pet Flights: Frequently Asked Questions

Will my pet be taken off the plane if the flight is delayed?

That is the airline’s decision and depends on the length of the delay. If the flight is cancelled before departure, the airline returns a pet flying with you at the check-in counter.

Can my pet stay overnight at the airport?

A cargo pet can wait in the airline’s live animal area until the next flight. A pet flying with you comes back to you if it will not fly.

Do I need a new health certificate if my flight moves by one day?

Usually not, if the new date stays within the certificate’s validity. The EU, for example, accepts it for 10 days from issue. Check the destination’s rule for your case.

Is a pet flight booking a guarantee?

No. A pet’s place is confirmed by the airline and can still change because of weather, aircraft or space. A transport company plans around this but cannot promise a specific flight.

Who pays if the airline cancels my pet’s flight?

The airline’s conditions decide what it covers. Extra costs from a new date, such as a new certificate, are usually shared as set out in your contract.
