Ask which airline to use for a dog going from Vietnam to Türkiye and the obvious answer—Turkish Airlines, which flies nonstop—is usually the right one. What owners rarely hear is that the airline also decides which legal lane the pet enters Türkiye in, and that its own rules are stricter than Türkiye’s law. This guide is one part of Daisy Pet’s full Vietnam-to-Türkiye pet shipping guide, focused on which carriers accept dogs and cats.

The Airline Decides Which Lane Your Pet Enters

A pet shipped as manifest cargo travels on an air waybill, which places it in Türkiye’s import lane.

Türkiye admits pets through two lanes, and the way an airline carries your pet decides which one applies. A pet in the cabin or in checked baggage travels with its owner and enters through the passenger lane, with a limit of two animals per person. A pet carried as manifest cargo enters through the import lane, which adds a control certificate and customs clearance handled by an agent.

The health conditions are the same in both lanes, so the choice of airline changes the paperwork around the pet rather than the medical steps. Our Türkiye pet import requirements guide explains both lanes in detail. Each airline below is described together with the lane it puts a pet from Vietnam into.

Turkish Airlines: The Only Nonstop Option

Turkish Airlines flies nonstop between Istanbul and both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, about nine hours each way, and it is the only airline we found operating those nonstop routes in 2026. A pet can travel three ways, and the airline’s own pet pages set the limits:

Option Weight and container Lane in Türkiye
Cabin Up to 8 kg with the carrier; soft bag up to 23×30×40 cm; under the seat in front Passenger
Checked baggage (hold) Up to 50 kg with the crate; hard crate up to 75×75×125 cm with a lateral lock Passenger
Turkish Cargo Crates above those sizes, and breeds that cannot travel as baggage Import

Only cats, dogs and small songbirds travel with passengers, the pet fee is separate from the baggage allowance, and each passenger may bring two carriers, only one of which can sit in the cabin. Cabin passengers are seated at a window. For the crate itself, see our guide to IATA crate requirements for pet air travel.

Turkish Cargo runs a dedicated live animal terminal at Istanbul Airport.

Crates for the hold need a hard surface, a lateral locking system, ventilation and a watertight base, and the pet must wear a collar. Because the Vietnam route runs about nine hours, the rule requiring a water dispenser for flights of eight hours or more applies to every hold crate. Two adult dogs of similar size may share a crate only if each weighs 14 kg or less (10 kg for cats); heavier animals travel alone. Sedated and pregnant animals are not accepted, and our IATA crate size calculator helps you choose a crate that stays inside these limits.

What Turkish Airlines Checks at the Counter

Turkish Airlines enforces Türkiye’s conditions before the pet boards, so problems surface at the check-in counter rather than at Istanbul. For a flight into Türkiye it requires a veterinary health certificate issued and stamped by the official veterinary authority within the last 48 hours, and the certificate must say the animal is healthy and free of parasites and other infectious diseases.

It also looks for the microchip, the vaccination record and the rabies titer report, and states plainly that a pet is refused if the destination country’s conditions aren’t met. Under those rules a certificate signed three days early, or one that says nothing about parasites, does not meet the airline’s condition.

Snub-Nosed Dogs and Cats: The 27°C Rule

Breeds with short noses have shorter airways, and the airline treats that as a heat and breathing risk. Since October 2021, Turkish Airlines does not carry dogs and cats with respiratory problems in the hold as checked baggage. They may fly in the cabin if pet and carrier stay within 8 kg. If they are too heavy for the cabin, the only route is Turkish Cargo, and it sets four conditions:

  • A crate one size larger than the standard
  • Ventilation on all four sides
  • An indemnity letter signed by the shipper
  • A temperature below 27°C at both the origin and the destination

Learn the feature, not the list: a flat or upturned nose. Turkish Cargo’s list includes pugs, bulldogs, Boston Terriers, boxers, Shih Tzus, Chow Chows, Cane Corsos, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Chihuahuas, along with cats such as Persians, Exotics, Himalayans, British Shorthairs and Scottish Folds, and it counts crosses. For departures from Vietnam the temperature condition generally points to the cooler months. Our Vietnam to Türkiye pet shipping timeline shows how to set the paperwork dates around a weather-driven flight.

Breeds Turkish Airlines and Turkish Cargo Refuse

Turkish Cargo’s live animal FAQ cites handling risks in an emergency for its outright ban. The restrictions run in three tiers, and none of them matches Türkiye’s law exactly.

  • Never accepted, crosses included: American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Pit Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Japanese Tosa and American Bully. The passenger pages add Bull Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
  • Cargo only, if Turkish Cargo agrees: American Bulldog, Bandog, Tosa Inu, Caucasian Ovcharka, Dogue de Bordeaux, Doberman, Presa Canario, Rottweiler, mastiffs other than the Bullmastiff, wolf-dog hybrids, Anatolian Shepherd and Boerboel, with their crosses. Turkish Cargo requires the reinforced CR82 crate for these dogs and for a longer list that also includes Great Danes, Cane Corsos and Boxers.
  • Not accepted at all: Sphynx (hairless) cats, and any cat or dog under 10 weeks old.

Turkish law bans six breeds nationwide, and all six sit on the airline’s “never accepted” list. The second tier is an airline rule, but it is not only that: the IATA Timatic database that airline staff check at the counter also lists Rottweilers, Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, several mastiff types, Bandogs and Tosa Inus, with crosses, as not allowed to enter. Turkish Cargo may still consider some of them as cargo, so get the airline’s written answer before you book.

Alternatives When Turkish Airlines Doesn’t Fit

Four other carriers connect Vietnam with Istanbul through a hub. Each adds a transit rule, and each one decides which lane the pet enters Türkiye in:

Airline (hub) How a pet travels from Vietnam Lane in Türkiye Main limits
Qatar Airways (Doha) Checked baggage or cargo, depending on route and aircraft; no cabin Passenger if checked baggage Refuses snub-nosed breeds and crosses; strong breeds cargo only; minimum age 12 weeks; whole trip on Qatar Airways
Singapore Airlines (Singapore) Checked baggage up to 32 kg with the crate, or cargo; no cabin Passenger if checked baggage Needs a Singapore transshipment licence; whole trip on Singapore Airlines; crate height limit of 70 cm on the A350
Emirates (Dubai) Cargo through Emirates SkyCargo Import At least 6 hours’ transit in Dubai; snub-nosed breeds refused apart from a winter window; minimum age from 15 weeks
Etihad (Abu Dhabi) Cargo Import Snub-nosed breeds only from 1 November to 1 March; minimum age 16 weeks; journey up to 24 hours

Regional airspace risks have caused short-notice schedule changes on Gulf routes in 2026, so confirm flight status and that the specific Istanbul routing accepts pets before you build a timeline around it. If you choose Singapore Airlines, our guide to airlines for pet shipping to Singapore covers the transshipment side.

Choosing the Airline: A Short Decision Path

  • Pet and carrier up to 8 kg, not snub-nosed: cabin on Turkish Airlines nonstop, passenger lane
  • Larger pet, standard breed, crate within 75×75×125 cm and 50 kg: the hold on Turkish Airlines nonstop, passenger lane
  • Bigger crate, tier-two breed, or a snub-nosed pet over 8 kg: Turkish Cargo, import lane, and cool temperatures at both ends
  • Turkish Airlines not possible: Qatar Airways or Singapore Airlines keep the passenger lane; Emirates and Etihad move the pet into the import lane
  • A breed on the never-accepted list: no carrier here will take it

The method matters as much as the airline. Our guide to cabin, checked baggage and manifest cargo explains the trade-offs of each.

Who This Guide Is For

This covers owners flying a pet dog or cat from Vietnam to Türkiye and choosing a carrier. It does not cover flights leaving Türkiye, and airline rules change often, so check the current pet pages of the carrier before booking.
