Search around and you’ll find quotes anywhere from $2,500 to $9,500 for shipping a pet to the UK. Most of those numbers come from US or EU departure points, where the pet can often fly as checked baggage with the owner. That option doesn’t exist for a shipment leaving Vietnam — every pet enters Great Britain as manifest cargo, which changes the cost structure enough that a generic range isn’t much use for planning. The rules behind each cost are in our guide to UK pet import requirements from Vietnam.

Below is how a 2026 Daisy quote breaks down for a 12 kg dog flown to Manchester as manifest cargo. The total came to about $10,400 — higher than most generic guides quote, for reasons that are worth understanding before you assume something’s wrong with a number.

Why a UK Shipment Costs More Than a Typical Cargo Booking

Three things push the total above what owners expect from other cargo destinations:

  • No accompanied-baggage option. Because every pet must travel as manifest cargo, there’s no cheaper accompanied-baggage tier to fall back on, unlike routes where a small pet can fly in the cabin or the hold alongside its owner.
  • Vietnam’s “not listed” status. The rabies antibody blood test (RNATT) and the paperwork built around it add a real cost line that pets from Part 1 listed countries skip entirely.
  • A customs layer most owners don’t expect. Because the pet moves as cargo, a UK clearing agent collects it and clears it through customs, a step that doesn’t apply to a pet arriving as accompanied baggage in most other countries.

The Cost Breakdown, Stage by Stage

Here is how that total splits, grouped into the three stages every UK shipment goes through:

Stage Covers Approximate Cost
Documents & pre-departure testing Health certificate, microchip, parasite treatment, RNATT blood test, and the UK-side import paperwork prepared before departure ≈ $2,200
Flight & cargo handling Airline cargo booking, Airway Bill, warehouse fees, and departure-side customs declaration ≈ $6,000
UK arrival & clearance Destination agent, import clearance handling, and processing at the animal reception facility ≈ $2,200

The single largest line item is the flight and cargo handling stage — it usually runs 55-60% of the total, driven mainly by crate size and cargo weight rather than paperwork.

Cats cost less, mainly because the crate is smaller. Daisy’s 2026 cargo quotes for a cat to London or Manchester ran $3,900–$4,150, with freight of $1,800–$2,800. Those cat quotes did not include the UK arrival stage — the destination agent, import clearance and animal reception fees — which on the dog quote above came to about $2,200.

What Moves the Price Up or Down

Pet size and crate dimensions. Cargo pricing is largely volumetric. A 12kg dog and a 30kg dog aren’t a small gap in cost — the crate size jumps a full IATA category, and cargo airlines price by volume, not just weight.

A failed or borderline blood test. If the RNATT result comes back under 0.5 IU/mL, the vaccination and the 30-day wait have to be repeated from scratch, adding both time and cost that a clean first test avoids entirely.

Breed restrictions. Snub-nosed breeds that commercial carriers won’t take in cargo may need a private charter flight instead — a different price bracket than a standard cargo booking, and one that needs a direct quote rather than a general estimate.

Route and transit airport. Not every airline flying toward the UK is cleared to land a pet at a UK-approved facility, and the approved list shifts depending on which cargo handler an airline is contracted with at any given airport. That affects which route is even available, not just the price — see airlines approved to fly pets to the UK.

Handling It Yourself vs. Working With an Agent

Nothing above requires a shipping company by law — an owner can theoretically book cargo space, arrange the health certificate, and handle the UK side independently. In practice, almost nobody does, because the UK side of this process runs through a clearing agent by requirement: airlines and ground handlers at UK airports do not let a private individual clear cargo through customs. That single requirement is usually what tips owners toward using an international pet relocation service rather than piecing the shipment together stage by stage.

Full Timeline for Budgeting

Cost and timeline are linked closely on this route — the three-month wait after the blood test isn’t optional, and rushing it isn’t possible at any price.
