The number that gets misquoted most about Indonesia’s pet quarantine is the length. Plenty of guides still list “7 to 14 days” as an open-ended range, leaving owners to plan for the worst case. Checked against a real Vietnam-to-Jakarta shipment, the actual figure is fixed: 7 days. See the Indonesia pet transport guide for where quarantine fits into the full entry process.

Part 1: Where Quarantine Happens

Animal quarantine holding facility where pets clear Indonesia's mandatory 7-day hold
Every pet from Vietnam spends the mandatory 7-day hold at Barantin’s quarantine facility inside Soekarno-Hatta before release.

Every pet from Vietnam clears quarantine at the same facility — the Gedung Karantina Pertanian (Agricultural Quarantine Building) at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten. This is the only location set up for this route, and it’s run by Barantin (Badan Karantina Indonesia), the agency that replaced BARANTAN in 2023. Broader entry requirements are covered in the Indonesia pet import guide.

Part 2: How Long It Actually Takes

The 7-day figure is what a real shipment experienced, not a best-case estimate. Some sources still describe a range extending to 14 days, which may reflect how older material handled cases needing extra veterinary review — but for a pet arriving with complete, compliant documentation, 7 days is the confirmed length.

Part 3: Booking the Quarantine Slot

Reserving quarantine is simpler than the multi-week advance booking some countries require: Indonesia’s Animal Quarantine Office needs notice at least 2 days before departure from Vietnam. That short window means the booking step doesn’t have to anchor the rest of the preparation timeline — it fits in near the end, once the flight is already confirmed.

Part 4: What It Costs

Quarantine fees run roughly $300 to $600, scaling with the pet’s size and whether any veterinary attention is needed during the stay. A full breakdown against the rest of the shipment’s costs is in the Indonesia relocation cost guide.

Part 5: What Happens During the Stay

Once cleared through Barantin’s inspection on arrival, the pet is held at the facility for observation for the remainder of the 7-day period. Staff monitor for any signs of illness, and the pet is released to the owner or their agent once the holding period ends and no issues are found. This applies to every pet entering Indonesia through Soekarno-Hatta — including pets whose final destination is somewhere else in the country. What day-to-day life looks like once a pet settles in is covered in living in Jakarta with pets.

Part 6: If Bali Is the Final Destination

Bali is closed to pets by air, sea and road under its provincial rules, so a pet that clears quarantine in Jakarta cannot continue on to Bali. See why pets can’t be brought to Bali before planning a move there.
