No six-month titer test wait like Japan. No six-week treatment protocol like Australia. Thailand is a destination where a 4–6 week preparation window is genuinely sufficient — provided you know the correct sequence and don’t overlook the DLD Import Permit, which is the single most common reason pets run into trouble at Thai airports. If your pet already has a valid, unexpired rabies vaccine, prep can move on the faster end of that range; if this is a first dose or a lapsed one, budget for Daisy Pet’s 30-day post-vaccination safety buffer instead.

This guide uses backward planning from your flight date — the most reliable method for ensuring no deadline is missed. For the full legal requirements, see our Thailand pet import laws 2026 guide.

Why Thailand Only Needs 4–6 Weeks

Three factors create this advantage over stricter destinations: no RNATT/FAVN titer test (eliminates 3–6 months of waiting), no mandatory quarantine (no need to book a quarantine facility slot), and the DLD Import Permit needs only 7 working days minimum if you apply in advance by email (processing itself typically takes 3–7 working days). If your pet already has a microchip and a valid, unexpired rabies vaccine, the Import Permit becomes the main constraint and the process can move even faster. If not, Daisy Pet’s 30-day post-vaccination safety buffer (see Week 6 below) sets the pace instead.

The 6-Week Countdown (Planned Backward from Flight Date)

Week 6 — Six Weeks Before Departure: Foundation Check

Start with two prerequisites. Microchip: does your pet have an ISO 11784/11785 (15-digit) microchip? If not, implant one this week — it must precede the rabies vaccine. Vaccinations: if your pet already has a valid, unexpired rabies vaccine on record, there’s no wait needed — skip ahead. If this is a first dose or a previous vaccine has lapsed, vaccinate this week: Thailand’s legal minimum is 21 days before departure, but Daisy Pet’s operating standard is 30 days as a safety buffer (a primary dose also requires the pet to be at least 12 weeks old). Dogs also need current Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, and Leptospirosis vaccines (cats need Feline Panleukopenia), on the same schedule. If any of these are missing or overdue, vaccinate immediately this week.

Week 5 — Five Weeks Before Departure: Apply for DLD Import Permit

This is the most important and most commonly missed step. Email qsap_bkk_import@dld.go.th (Suvarnabhumi’s Animal Quarantine Station — use the airport-specific address if flying elsewhere) with: a copy of your passport, pet details (species, breed, age, microchip number), planned travel date, and entry airport. DLD’s minimum is 7 working days before departure, with processing typically taking 3–7 working days — starting at week 5 gives you a wide safety margin and time to handle any follow-up document requests. DLD does allow applying for the permit on arrival instead, but some airlines won’t board a pet without one already issued — skipping ahead to book flights without the permit in hand is a real risk. See what happened when one of our clients tried it.

Week 4 — Four Weeks Before Departure: Book Flight & Confirm Pet Slot

Once you have the Import Permit (or while awaiting it), confirm your airline and book a pet slot. Not every flight accepts pets, and most airlines limit AVIH slots to 1–2 pets per flight. Book early, especially around Vietnamese holidays or summer peak season. See our airlines guide for pet transport to Thailand for carrier-specific rules.

Once the AVIH slot is booked, the crate moves through check-in like any other checked item — but only after every document, including the DLD Import Permit, has been verified.

Week 3 — Three Weeks Before Departure: Crate Preparation & Health Exam

If your pet doesn’t already have a compliant IATA crate, purchase one and begin crate-training over the next 2–3 weeks. Simultaneously, schedule a full health examination at a licensed veterinary clinic — this exam forms the medical basis for the health certificate you’ll obtain the following week.

Week 2 — Ten to Fourteen Days Before Departure: Obtain DAH Health Certificate

Contact your local Sub-Department of Animal Health (SDAH) to obtain the Export Animal Health Certificate. The certificate is valid for 10 days, so timing matters: request it 8–12 days before departure — early enough to process, late enough that it remains valid when you fly.

Departure Day: Airport Checklist

At the airport, have four documents ready: (1) DLD Import Permit, (2) DAH Health Certificate, (3) Vaccination record / pet passport, (4) Airline pet booking confirmation. Arrive at the airport at least 30 minutes earlier than usual — the check-in process for pets requires additional document verification at the counter.
